Precinct Delegate

Precinct Delegates are elected during the August primaries to serve two year terms representing their neighborhoods (the citizens living in the same voting precinct) to the county chapters of the two major political parties.  In Kent County, the deadline to register to run for this position is 4:00 pm on Tuesday, May 5, 2026.

What are the responsibilities of Precinct Delegates? Delegates attend four county conventions during their 2 year term.  They elect an executive committee for the county party and may be chosen to represent the county party at district and state party conventions.  State party conventions are held three times during a precinct delegate’s 2 year term.  They are held to elect state party and district leadership, to select delegates to the national party conventions, to determine presidential electors, and to choose the parties’ nominees for state supreme court justices, state board of education members, board members for state universities, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, and state attorney general.

What is the potential impact of a Precinct Delegate? A well informed delegate has an opportunity to be a trusted source of reliable information in his or her community and social circle.  Taken seriously, this role has the ability to affect primary elections and ballot questions.  Additionally, by choosing who their party will put on the ballot for state attorney general, secretary of state, and state supreme court justices, Precinct Delegates have an important role in deciding who will ultimately fill these important positions.
